Official Launch of the Energy Efficiency National Partnership on 29 April 2010

Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, officially launched the Energy Efficiency National Partnership (EENP) on 29 April 2010. The EENP is a joint programme by the National Environment Agency (NEA), Energy Market Authority (EMA) and Economic Development Board (EDB). The event was attended by over 150 senior management representatives mainly from the industry sector. The keynote speakers Mr Jeffrey Davis (Asia Pacific Manufacturing Director, ExxonMobil Chemical Asia Pacific) and Mr Christopher Dobson (Vice-President & Managing Director, Glaxo Wellcome Manufacturing) shared their insights and experience in integrating energy efficiency improvement in their operations and how this gave their companies a competitive edge by lowering energy costs.

The EENP is a significant milestone in Singapore’s drive to improve energy efficiency in the industry sector, which accounts for 60% of Singapore’s total energy consumption. It is a voluntary programme that seeks to help companies put in place energy management systems and implement projects to improve energy efficiency. To date, more than fifty companies have agreed to participate in the EENP programme as Founding Partners.

As EENP partners, companies can look forward to preferential rates for EENP learning events and benefit from NEA’s various energy efficiency incentive schemes that support energy efficiency initiatives. EENP partners will also be provided with opportunities to network and participate in benchmarking studies, and be given priority to attend special technical workshops and seminars. There will also be a national recognition scheme for companies that have implemented energy management systems and achieved energy savings as a result.

Following the official launch of EENP, the environmental training division of the NEA, the Singapore Environment Institute (SEI) organised the first EENP Learning Network seminar on 30 April 2010 titled (“Improving Industrial Energy Efficiency”), featuring Ms Aimee McKane, senior programme manager and staff scientist from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Industrial Partnerships Programme. Ms McKane has more than 25 years of experience in industrial energy efficiency and has worked extensively with the U.S. government, International Standards Organisation (ISO), United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and major industries in managing industrial energy efficiency performance. Speaking to more than 170 industry participants from major energy consumers and MNCs, Ms McKane highlighted key pointers from the U.S. experience, which could be adapted in Singapore, to help industries make significant energy efficiency improvements.
