Voluntary Agreement to Promote Energy Efficient Appliances
Background
The National Environment Agency (NEA), in partnership with the Housing Development Board (HDB) and the Energy Market Authority (EMA), signed the Voluntary Agreement to Promote Energy Efficient Appliances with 4 retailers and 12 suppliers of household appliances, on 11th September 2009 at the launch of the Energy Challenge Fair 2009. The ceremony was witnessed by the Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Dr Amy Khor.
Commenting on the rationale for this Voluntary Agreement, Dr Amy Khor said, "We see retailers and suppliers performing the role of ‘gatekeepers’ who can help to weed out the less energy efficient home appliances from the market and influence demand by bringing in and actively promoting the more energy efficient models."
This Voluntary Agreement represents a landmark partnership between the government and the household appliance industry to work towards promoting energy efficient appliances, namely air-conditioners, refrigerators and clothes dryers with 3 and 4 ticks on the energy label. The Voluntary Agreement will stand for the period of 1 year, with effect from 11 September 2009.
Key Commitments and Benefits
Retailers and suppliers participating in this Voluntary Agreement have commited to bring in more energy efficient appliance models and to assist their customers in choosing the energy efficient models, by providing accurate energy and cost savings information related to the products.
In return, NEA, HDB and EMA will supply educational materials to retail outlets to better promote energy efficient appliances, organize energy efficient appliance roadshows and fairs, and allow participating retailers and suppliers to carry the "10% Energy Challenge Partner" logo.
